One Thing to Remember When You Fight with Your Spouse

My wife, Michelle, is the sweetest person in the world.  I have yet to meet a better servant or someone with a bigger heart.  From time to time, though, we do disagree and even get into arguments and fights.

Conflict is normal in any relationship.  In fact, I believe you are not close to anyone you have not had conflict with at some point.  Someone once told me that if you really want to know someone, you need to get in a fight with them.  I do not recommend starting fights, but conflict does have its place.

I was listening to a podcast by Michael Hyatt last week, titled What I Learned About Leadership from a Fight with My Wife.  He gave some great tips for conflict at home and the workplace.

After seven years of marriage, I have learned to remember one thing when having confrontation with my wife.  When it is difficult, when we cannot agree on something, when I am questioning her motives, it is this one rule that I choose to remind myself of: We are on the same team.

It is so easy when life is happening to get into conflict and forget that your life partner is on the same team as you.  I find it helpful to step back from the argument and intentionally remind myself that Michelle is on my team.  She cares about me.  She really does love me.  Then I can better reengage the discussion.

What do you find helpful to get you through fights and conflicts at home?

Hey, I’m Adam Suter. This is my personal blog. I am married to the love of my life, Michelle, and have three wonderful children. We live in Marietta, GA. I run a small nonprofit. Some of the things that fascinate me are faith, new ideas, people, stories, productivity, nonprofits, and my own children.

That’s a great tip for sure. I think it’s also really important to remember that your spouse, the one who you love and respect, put before yourself and care for, has an opinion, and if you truly value their opinion in other aspects of life then you will at least have a softer heart if they are voicing their opinion in an argument. I hope my thoughts came through with that horribly long run on sentence 🙂
