Work That Matters

I Remember

This month marks the two year anniversary of my father’s death. We are trying not to make a big deal out of this day and focus on his birthday, my parents anniversary and the holidays. Our goal is to remember the good stuff. It’s hard to forget though. The end was long and difficult for my father…and for us.

Maybe next year will be better. I know it’s okay if it isn’t though. Here is a poem I wrote this week. I call it, “I Remember” and I hope it helps you remember the good and the difficult times with your loved ones.

I Remember
by Adam Suter

I remember the last days.
We didn’t know they were going to be his last days.

I remember sitting in the hospital room for a month.
This is a sad memory, one I want to forget.

I remember when the nurse commented on how small he was.
No one had ever called my dad small.

I remember the last time I prayed for him and told him I loved him.
If only I had known, I would have stayed longer that day.

I remember finding out he had to go under.
There was no way to know it wouldn’t be like the other times.

I remember feeling the warmth of his hand when he was all but gone.
Not letting it pass too quickly, I settled into this moment. I can still feel his warm hand.

But

I also remember the feeling of making my dad proud.
It is an amazing feeling.

I also remember the many road trips we had together.
Those were great times.

I also remember spending time talking about his childhood.
These stories are legendary.

I also remember vacations to the ski slopes, Disney, and the list goes on.
He loved spoiling us.

I also remember the many lessons I learned from him and from his life.
Play hurt. Love people. Be patient with others.

I also remember his presence.
In the room with him, you would just feel safe.

Memories are bittersweet.
Do not forget the bitter, or you will miss an opportunity to help another.
Always treasure the sweet, for they are what make life worth living.
