Work That Matters

Blogging Tip #1: Consistency

All the professional bloggers out there seem to agree on the first thing you must do to be a successful blogger: Be Consistent. I am not a professional blogger, nor am I consistent on my personal blog.

Like you, I have excuses. I’m busy. I have people to meet with and things to do. I blog for my nonprofit, so my personal blog takes a backseat most of the time. (I’m working on it Michael Hyatt. I’m working on it.)

The fact is, though, that in nonprofit work, as in most areas, relationships are everything. People don’t connect relationally with a business or organization. It is you, the individual, they want to get to know. Trust is key, and it is built between individuals, not businesses.

This is why having a personal blog is so important. You can build relational trust by adding value to people from the comfort of their laptop or mobile device.

I have been blogging inconsistently for almost four years with my nonprofit, much less on AdamSuter.com. I noticed a distinct difference once I became consistent with my nonprofit blog. Now I am working on being consistent on my personal blog.

Here are 3 Ways to Begin to Increase Your Blogging Consistency. I am giving these a try and they have been helpful so far.

  1. Sacrificing pics. In an ideal world I would have awesome pictures to go with each blog post. I love reading posts with pictures and I would like to have them in every post of mine. For consistency sake, however, I am going to sacrifice pics right now. I do know of at least one pro blogger that doesn’t use pics. His name is Seth something or other. You may have heard of him.
  2. Write like you talk. Godin! That is his name. 🙂 He also recommends writing like you talk. I have just begun doing this. Not sure what I think about it from a perfectionist/quality standpoint, but it does help with consistency.
  3. Use Videos. There are some great videos out there. It is super easy to post them on your blog via youtube, vimeo, etc. I recommend videos no longer than 5 minutes. People probably won’t watch it otherwise.

With my blogging consistency, I’m working on getting to 3 times a week. Right now I’m averaging 1-2 times a week. I’d love to get your advice in the comments section.

What tips and tricks do you have for being more consistent with your blogging?

Hey, I’m Adam Suter. This is my personal blog. I am married to the love of my life, Michelle, and have three wonderful children. We live in Marietta, GA. I run a small nonprofit.
