Helping My Children with Materialism, Entitlement and Stuff

My wife and I are hoping to help our kids have an appropriate view of stuff. We want them to grow up and use stuff to help people. We don’t want them to be materialistic consumers. We don’t want them to be entitled. At this point, we don’t know how to do this. Can you help? What tips and resources do you have? Please share in the comments section. Thanks.

Blogging Tip #2: Pick One Social Media

I know, you feel like you need to be on every social media. Everyone else is, right? Wrong! Most people are not active on more than one social media. If they are, they are either not getting anything done or they have a team of people making that possible. Multiple Accounts Yes, it is okay to have an account on more than one social media. You never know when one is going to take off and you may want to switch. However, stick with one as your primary source of engagement. Which? Which one should you choose? Simple. Where is your audience? It doesn’t matter how cool Twitter is or…

    Say No Today

Today someone is going to ask you to do something you shouldn’t do. The reason you shouldn’t do it is not based on moral grounds. No, they are going to ask you to do something good, possibly something very good. Still, you need to say, “No!” They are going to give you many reasons why you should do what they are asking you to do. These reasons are going to make a lot of sense. In fact, you may not have any good responses to the points this person makes. Say “no” anyways. The reason you need to say “no” to the opportunity coming your way today is because you…

Just coffee? I don’t think so.

I know a lady who is making a difference in the lives of others. She owns a coffee shop. She is a single mom. She is an incredible human being. Her coffee shop is by an elementary school. In the morning, parents come in and hang out, engaging in great conversation with one another (and her) after dropping their kids off at school. During the day neighbors come and are given a huge smile to brighten up their day. Teachers love her cafe as well. And they love her. After school, children pile in, each being greeted by name. Yes, she knows all their names. Every single name. Her coffee…

What Your Responsiveness Communicates to Your Team, Co-workers, and Others.

“You communicate all the wrong things when you’re not responsive.” Bryan Miles This is so true. If I can give you one piece of advice when it comes to working with others it is this, Be Responsive. If someone emails you, email them back, even if they don’t ask you any questions. If they call you, call them back. If you aren’t available when they call, shoot them a text letting them know you will get back to them. If you get a text, you should always reply. Yes, everytime. If you are not responsive to communication, it will always communicate things you do not want to communicate. Here are…

    5 Tips for Overcoming Stress

I do not feel stressed, but I know that I am. Currently we are moving from our home of the last seven plus years, changing roles at work, moving our nonprofit, launching a new nonprofit, fundraising, preparing to homeschool our kids, trying to say goodbye to all of our friends, selling and buying homes, and the list goes on. I say I don’t feel stressed. The fact is that when I came up with the idea for this post, I didn’t. However, a week or two later, as I am editing, I do feel stressed. I am not trying to impress you or get your sympathy. You have a lot going…

    Missed Opportunities to Learn

I was working on my car, checking the oil, checking the air in the tires. There is not much beyond this that I know how to do when it comes to cars. I’m not too savy when it comes to fixing stuff either. I typically try the “leave-it-alone-and-see-if-the-problem-goes-away” strategy. You would be surprised how often this actually works. My Dad, on the otherhand, could fix anything. He was amazing. He could build stuff, fix cars and do electrical stuff as well. Unfortunately I did not pick this up from him. I was thinking, if I had an hour with him once a week, in addition to enjoying his company again,…

8 Things My Volunteers Do Better Than Me

Volunteers are essential to any nonprofit. They are the lifebloood. Relationships with volunteers are what keep me going during the ups and downs of work and life. Sometimes it is hard to know what to give to volunteers. There is definitely a range of gifts when it comes to volunteers. You don’t want to hand the keys to the car over to everyone. Perhaps you have struggled with whether or not to give certain responsibilities to volunteers. You may have even experienced volunteers who said they would do something and then didn’t follow through. That can make it difficult to trust again. I want to encourage you to do so…

    My GTD Breakthrough with Contexts

GTD stands for Getting Things Done, a book written by David Allen. It really is the productivity book when it comes to task management and doing exactly what it says. I started reading it over a year ago and began implementing it soon thereafter. Immediately I found value in the 2 minute rule and Weekly Review. However, the whole contexts concept has been a difficult transition. The idea is that instead of primarily grouping your tasks by day, that you would group them by your context. I have continued to struggle with making a daily list, then not getting everything done and having to move things to the next day. The…
