Focus on Your Goal, Nothing Else

Do you ever get distracted? I do. In life I am easily distracted by people, needs and opportunities.

It is good to be open to interruptions, but if you have a goal, you can’t let distractions keep you from where you need to be. You must focus.

People, needs and opportunities are all good things. In fact, they should all be a priority. However, you can’t serve all people, meet all needs or pursue every opportunity. You must focus.

Here is another story from my children. We were swimming recently and our two oldest were racing across the pool. The older was using a kick-board to make it “even.” Still she was winning.

I noticed my son, though he could easily beat his big sister (again while she was using a kick-board), kept getting close, but not winning. It was because he would stop halfway to look for his big sister rather than continue to bust it, focused only on the goal of the other side of the pool.

Again, I saw this as a potential life lesson for my son (and me!). So, I had him come to me, grabbed his head so he would look at me (not angrily). I shared, “Buddy, if you want to win, you have to look straight ahead. Stop worrying about the person next to you or you won’t win.”

This is true for all of us. If we focus on others, we will miss our goal. We must constantly do the hard work to not be distracted by the many good things, the competition, the “opportunities” around us, and stay completely in tune with where we are going. May you do just that this week.

Are you easily distracted from the goal before you? What are you going to do to get refocused on the one thing you know you are suppose to do?

I get distracted by excellent posts like this! 🙂

I find myself looking at “the competition” (even though it’s not really my competition) and feeling inadequate. I have to tell myself to STOP IT! I am my own me and I have to focus on becoming the best me I can and building the best business I can.

    Thanks for the encouragement, Adam.
