    Prayer Life

Our prayer life is one of the most important parts of our journey with Christ. I have not always believed this. I didn’t grow up with this belief. Prayer, for most of my life, has been more like wishing someone good luck. You are thinking about them. You care. But the words do not really do anything. As I align my beliefs on prayer with Scripture, I am coming to the conclusion that prayer is more than well wishes. Prayer changes things. No, God is not a distant Santa Claus waiting to grant our every wish. He is however, an attentive Father who longs for his children to talk to…

    2016 Q2 Quarterly Offsite

Last week I did my Q2 Offsite. It was fabulous! I sent this text to my wife after the first day. Day 1: Create, Learn, Serve As mentioned before, I typically look at 3 areas and I categorize them in the following way: Create – What am I going to work on this next 90 days? This then directs my schedule and leads to an Ideal Week. Learn – What books, podcasts, etc am I going to be reading and listening to this quarter? I can’t read it all, but I can do some. Serve – Who are my priority relationships? Who has God brought into my life that needs…

Start With Why by Simon Sinek

Start With Why by Simon Sinek is a fascinating book for business owners, startups and anyone wanting to create work that matters. His encouragement is to start with why you are doing what you are doing, rather than how you are going to do it or what you are going to do. This is interesting, right? The main idea can be summed up in this quote: “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.” Sinek gives examples of companies that have done this successfully, like Apple and Southwest. These companies have essentially created a cult following. They have…

Job Idea #3: Car Maintenance Coach

For years I was blessed to have an amazing mechanic to take care of my, my family and my friends’ cars. Tommy became a good friend and we still connect from time to time. He does amazing work, knows everything about cars and does not overcharge. If you have questions, he has the answer and is very patient, even with people like me! I’ve heard him mention that at some point he physically will not be able to work on cars anymore. For now, though, he continues doing great work, helping a lot of people. This leads me to an idea for him, and possibly for some of you: Car…

Questions to Consider as You Head Toward Your Quarterly Offsite

I’m two weeks away from my next Quarterly Offsite! Excited! It is going to be a great time of rest, renewal and refocusing. Here some questions you should consider for a Quarterly Offsite: 1) How am I going to rest on the retreat? Make plans to be offline from email, social media, texts, phone calls, etc. That’s why I call it an “Offsite.” You are not available. Make plans for times of prayer, physical activity and a nap (or two). 2) What will I read, watch or listen to on this Quarterly Offsite? Typically I include content that is inspiring, spiritually refreshing and/or goal focused. There is so much great…

    What’s New March 2016

Some great changes to the site this week: Pages: Coaching – As mentioned last time, I have removed the 4 categories from my coaching page in order to better reflect my focus on Idea Addicts. You can see the new Value Proposition there as well. I help Idea Addicts find clarity and focus so that they can create work that matters. Categories: The big change here is that I am changing it from “Categories” to “Idea Categories.” Small but important shift. I’ve also rewritten my original explanation of these categories. You can read the new breakdown here. The vision is the same, but the vocabulary is updated. Events: Lift Training (April 23 in Marietta, GA) –…

Establishing Expectations for Your Nonprofit Board

Depending on the size of your nonprofit and what you do, your Board of Directors may function very differently than other nonprofits. You may have a large Board or a small one. Your Board may be very active with the organization, more of a group of advisors or even fundraising focused. What is not different from one Board to the next is the need for clear and concise expectations. Take the following five steps to get your Board of Directors aligned with the organizations. 1) Define what is expected of a Board Member currently. 2) Decide what you need to add or take away from these expectations. 3) Write them…

Undistracted: Techniques for the Undisciplined Mind

One of the biggest roadblocks in my personal and professional life is that I am easily distracted. Whether it be a task, a person or a new opportunity, I find it difficult to remain focused. Because of this, I sometimes stray and my otherwise disciplined self ends up lost for a day, a week or sometimes longer. I have 3 techniques I use to help with this problem. 1) Rule Your Email. If you let it, your email will dominate your life. It will be a leash around your neck rather than a tool for your life and business. Turn off email notifications on your phone. No, you do not…
