Listening to Jesus

A Poem to Patrick: Were You Afraid?

Perhaps you had heard of them.
Those fierce warriors, strong and mighty.
Those pagan slave traders, feared by all.
Oh yes, you knew of the Irish!
Before your life with them really began, were you afraid?
Perhaps you had been having a normal day.
You probably spent time with loved ones.
You did not pray that day, for God was not a big part of your life.
Everything was about to change!
On that frightful night when they took you, were you afraid?
Perhaps you would yet live.
Now you were a slave, a mere shepherd boy.
Now you began to pray, as you said goodbye to your former life.
Your faith grew and grew over those cold, lonely, Irish winters!
As you looked at your new life, were you afraid?
Perhaps you believed your life was over.
But God was not done with you.
But God was only kindling in you a deep and abiding faith.
The door of your journey was only beginning to crack open!
When you had your dream, telling you to escape, were you afraid?
Perhaps your freedom was the best gift you could have imagined.
Jesus had a greater adventure he was preparing.
Jesus began to deepen your faith even more, readying you.
After years and years, another dream, to walk once more with the Irish!
Preparing to return, for Christ, were you afraid?
Perhaps you would lead one Irish to follow Jesus.
The love of God compelled you.
The love for Ireland moved you.
Headed back to those brutal, merciless sinners!
Your feet touching Irish soil again, were you afraid?
Perhaps God had prepared you for just this moment.
Thirty years of sharing Jesus.
Thirty years of showing Jesus.
A people transformed.
A people changed by the love of Christ in you.
The first nation in history to give up slavery because for Jesus Christ!
Only the beginning of a movement of God, you were not afraid!
