Undistracted: Techniques for the Undisciplined Mind

One of the biggest roadblocks in my personal and professional life is that I am easily distracted. Whether it be a task, a person or a new opportunity, I find it difficult to remain focused. Because of this, I sometimes stray and my otherwise disciplined self ends up lost for a day, a week or sometimes longer. I have 3 techniques I use to help with this problem. 1) Rule Your Email. If you let it, your email will dominate your life. It will be a leash around your neck rather than a tool for your life and business. Turn off email notifications on your phone. No, you do not…

New Year’s Resolutions Are So Overwhelming!

Happy New Year! Hope your 2015 was a good one. I am looking forward to seeing what the next 12 months holds. So, I don’t know about you, but New Year’s Resolutions are pretty overwhelming to me. There is so much talk in January about self-improvement. My brain cannot handle all the ideas…all the pressure! It gets complicated by the fact that I know 90% of it is talk and there is no real change going to occur. That is frustrating and it makes me want to hyperventilate just thinking about it. Take a deep breath.  Okay take 3. I have grabbed some of the great free resources that have come…

    2016: Yes You Can!

I like sweets. I mean, I like sweets a lot. Okay…I love sweets! For the past decade plus, however, I have been gaining about 2-3 lbs a year. It doesn’t sound like much at first. But think about it? It does not lead in a good direction. Great news! In 2015, I did not gain weight! In fact, I even lost a few pounds. How did I do it? Well, it wasn’t by going to the gym because I don’t have time for that. (Okay, I decide to spend my time in other ways…like writing blog posts at 5:00 am.) I cut desserts from my diet! I know, it sounds…

Get Away On A Personal Retreat

This past week I took a couple of mornings away from family and work to do a Quarterly Offsite. It was a great time of goal setting, prioritizing my life and resting. I was able to refocus on what is most important and add margin back into my life.   Time, Information and Relationships Typically I have taken a trip out of town each Spring to do a Personal Retreat. Normally I would focus on my vision, and then prioritize, according to my vision, the three areas of my life that tend to creep and consume: 1) Time – Sometimes this would come first because I typically have multiple ideas…

Read with Me: Essentialism by Greg McKeown

I just listened to an amazing podcast. Last week Michael Hyatt and Michele Cushatt interviewed Greg McKeown, author of Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, on the This Is Your Life podcast. Go here to listen to this podcast episode.  This interview was so good, I plan to listen to it on at least an annual basis to refocus me on the things I really need to be doing. Here are some of the notes I took. 1) Don’t be busy and unproductive. 2) What do I need to do and what do I need to stop doing? The first part here is the most important. What is essential? Everything else is…
