Texting Your Spouse While They Travel

This past week I was traveling and Michelle sent me some awesome texts. They really kept me going through my week and helped me not to miss the family so much. Here are a few she sent updating me on our son, CJ. Michelle: CJ’s new favorite word: “toiletries” Me: How is he using it? Michelle: Just saying it out loud and laughing. His whole class has been in trouble this week for potty words. He can’t help it. It’s all he thinks about right now. Michelle: So excited to show this to you! He’s pretty proud. Field day!      (This one goes with the picture above.) Michelle: Your son…

Attic: Lessons on Faith from My Children

“Daddy, can I go up in the attic with you?” I was preparing to do some rearranging up in our attic and my son, four year old C.J., was wanting to come up in the attic with me. Of course I told him yes, but I still had a few things to do before we could go up. The following 10 minutes consisted of C.J. seeing how many times he could ask, “Can we go up in the attic now?” Over and over he asked me, “Can we?! Can we go up now? Can we go up in the attic now?” He was so excited. He had been up there…

    I Remember

This month marks the two year anniversary of my father’s death. We are trying not to make a big deal out of this day and focus on his birthday, my parents anniversary and the holidays. Our goal is to remember the good stuff. It’s hard to forget though. The end was long and difficult for my father…and for us. Maybe next year will be better. I know it’s okay if it isn’t though. Here is a poem I wrote this week. I call it, “I Remember” and I hope it helps you remember the good and the difficult times with your loved ones. I Remember  by Adam Suter I remember…

A Leadership Lesson I Learned While Driving

One of the fun parts of living in New Orleans is the driving.  It is an adventure.  You never know what obstacles you may need to avoid or overcome.  Other drivers, potholes or a parade could all be on the agenda. I live just 5 miles from the heart of the city.  It is possible to get there in 15 minutes if (and this is a big if) there is no traffic, construction, a train (or two) or a boat (coming through the canal).  If any of these issues present themselves, it could take 45 minutes to get anywhere. Having lived here for several years now, I have learned how…

Be Thankful: 5 Ways to Appreciate Your Loved Ones

Who do you care about?  How does this person know you care about them?  I would like to suggest that if you are not intentional about showing appreciation, then you are not appreciative. Whether it is your parents, a spouse or significant other, or a best friend, you must show the person how you feel and this requires work.  You may be thinking, “Well, he knows I appreciate him,” or “She knows I love her.”  If you do not show how you feel, they do not know anything. Here are some practical tips for showing your appreciation to the people you care about.  These five verbs can be very helpful.…

    Pursuing Purpose

It drives us.  It helps us get up in the morning.  It impacts our work and home life.  It will determine the direction our lives take.  Purpose.  What gives you purpose?  Ever feel like your purpose is unclear? Purpose drives people to accomplish amazing feats.  It leads us to make a difference, to leave our mark on our family, in our jobs, and throughout our community and world.  It defines our identity and inspires us. A lack of purpose is crippling to a person.  It also defines us.  Have you ever seen the eyes of a person without purpose?  It is like looking at hopelessness.  It is an unforgettable experience.  Living without…

One Way My Wife Says I Have Improved My Work-Life Balance

It is difficult for me to have work-life balance.  I find it hard to manage the 24 hours I am given during the day between my home life and work life.  When I am at work, I feel guilty for not being at home.  When I am at home, I know I should be working. This situation is compounded by the nature of my work.  Three factors in particular add to the problem: I do not go into an office.  So my work and home life interact with one another on a daily basis. My work happens in and outside of the 8-5 work week.  It is very common for…
