Becoming a Reader: 3 Phrases Readers Don’t Use

Over the past year, I have taken some significant strides forward in my desire to become a reader. Perhaps I’ll share the reasons for this change later. As I’ve made the switch, I have found there are three phrases that have been part of my vocabulary, even part of my identity, for too long.

These phrases have held me back in my desire to be a reader and to be a better reader. They have inhibited my love of learning and ability to grow as a person. Well, it is time to let them go. Here they are, along with some alternatives.

1) “I’m not a reader.” Seems obvious, but if you say this phrase long enough, you begin to believe it. It is the number one killer on your path to becoming a reader.

Instead, begin saying (yes, say this aloud), “I am a reader.” Go ahead and say it right now. Really. Right now. … The fact is that those who identify as readers, they do something. They read. When you read, guess what you are? A reader. Begin changing your identity now.

2) “I hate reading.” Guess what? Readers don’t hate reading. If you want to become a reader, stop saying this. Two suggestions. First, choose to not hate reading. Second, pick some better books to read.

Instead, try this phrase, “I love reading.” Okay. I know it can be hard to change a habit, especially one involving your feelings. Start with this, “I love learning.” Let that catapult you into more books. Then add “I love reading” when it becomes true of you.

3) “I’m a slow reader.” Do you know how a slow reader becomes a fast reader? They read. If you are like me, you have believed the lie that because you have always been a slow reader you will always be a slow reader. This is not true.

Instead, try say, “I’m becoming a faster reader” or “I’m getting faster at reading.” Decide where you want to be. Begin taking steps in that direction, with your actions and words. If you read more, you will get faster at it. More importantly, if you decide to love reading, you will get faster at it.

Secret Reading Tip: Some of the best reading is done slowly and mindfully.

What are some phrases you have had to eliminate from your vocabulary or are trying to eliminate as you become a reader? Please share in the comments section or on social media.

Several years ago, another Sister called me a “reader”. I had never thought of myself that way, but I knew I was. If I want to know about something, or work though a problem, I find material about it. That is so much easier now because so much is on the web. It is not all accurate, but you can find lots of information. I have a tee shirt that says ” I canno live without books.” My library is now in a Nook and a laptop. They take up much less room, and are cheaper.
