Monthly Focus

Some people find it helpful, in addition to or in place of a Quarterly Offsite, to create a Monthly Focus.

→ Select one focus for each month.

This allows you to know your priority for each month. Most likely this would be in your work, since that is where you spend most of your time. However, if work were slow, a home project might be your one priority.

The hard part is coming up with one focus. The Idea Loop can help. It will take you from ideas to one clear focus for your month.

Here is the process:

  1. Ideation: What are the options for your monthly priorities? Some may be a project you start and finish. It might be an ongoing responsibility that is going to get additional focus and time for one month. It may be a relationship (personal or professional) that needs more attention for a period of time.
  2. Decision: Which one thing are you going to do each of the next three months? What is the one thing more important than all other projects, goals and people for each month?
  3. Elimination: What is extra? These are not the priority. Get rid of them.
  4. Action: Write down the names of the next three months. Next to each, write down the one focus for that month. Write down what you will accomplish and by when.

The goal here is for you to walk away knowing what is the one thing each month.
