Questions to Consider as You Head Toward Your Quarterly Offsite

I’m two weeks away from my next Quarterly Offsite! Excited! It is going to be a great time of rest, renewal and refocusing. Here some questions you should consider for a Quarterly Offsite: 1) How am I going to rest on the retreat? Make plans to be offline from email, social media, texts, phone calls, etc. That’s why I call it an “Offsite.” You are not available. Make plans for times of prayer, physical activity and a nap (or two). 2) What will I read, watch or listen to on this Quarterly Offsite? Typically I include content that is inspiring, spiritually refreshing and/or goal focused. There is so much great…

    What’s New March 2016

Some great changes to the site this week: Pages: Coaching – As mentioned last time, I have removed the 4 categories from my coaching page in order to better reflect my focus on Idea Addicts. You can see the new Value Proposition there as well. I help Idea Addicts find clarity and focus so that they can create work that matters. Categories: The big change here is that I am changing it from “Categories” to “Idea Categories.” Small but important shift. I’ve also rewritten my original explanation of these categories. You can read the new breakdown here. The vision is the same, but the vocabulary is updated. Events: Lift Training (April 23 in Marietta, GA) –…

The Idea Categories for My Blog

Since first starting my blog back in 2013, I have enjoyed bringing content and ideas that I hope have been helpful to you. I have grown as a person and I continue to be passionate about the topics I discuss here. If you are new to my blog, you should know that I am an Idea Addict. I love ideas (mine and yours). They fuel me and are my greatest addiction. I believe ideas can change a life, impact a community and bring a smile to a sad face. If you are an Idea Addict, you believe in the power of ideas as well. While we get sidetracked from time…

Establishing Expectations for Your Nonprofit Board

Depending on the size of your nonprofit and what you do, your Board of Directors may function very differently than other nonprofits. You may have a large Board or a small one. Your Board may be very active with the organization, more of a group of advisors or even fundraising focused. What is not different from one Board to the next is the need for clear and concise expectations. Take the following five steps to get your Board of Directors aligned with the organizations. 1) Define what is expected of a Board Member currently. 2) Decide what you need to add or take away from these expectations. 3) Write them…

Undistracted: Techniques for the Undisciplined Mind

One of the biggest roadblocks in my personal and professional life is that I am easily distracted. Whether it be a task, a person or a new opportunity, I find it difficult to remain focused. Because of this, I sometimes stray and my otherwise disciplined self ends up lost for a day, a week or sometimes longer. I have 3 techniques I use to help with this problem. 1) Rule Your Email. If you let it, your email will dominate your life. It will be a leash around your neck rather than a tool for your life and business. Turn off email notifications on your phone. No, you do not…

    Natalie’s 9 Tips

When my oldest was turning 9, I took her on a hike. While walk with her, I asked her to give me 9 pieces of advice, 9 things she had learned up to this point in her life. Here is what she came up with, in the order she came up with it. 1) Take your Bible to church. 🙂 2) Think about what you say before you speak so you don’t hurt someone’s feelings. 3) Pray. 4) Work on your talent. You are good at something. (She is an artist and works on this talent daily.) 5) Be a good friend. 6) If you see someone who is sad…

    Job Idea #2: Housing Coach

A friend of mine does home remodeling in another state. His work is really good and he knows everything about houses. Whenever I have questions, I always ask him. He is patient with my ignorance and is a great teacher. I’ve heard him mention that at some point he physically will not be able to do the work. For now, though, he continues doing amazing work. This leads me to an idea for him, and possibly for some of you: A Housing Coach. I know next to nothing when it comes to basic home care, and I would never even consider doing remodeling. Some of you are like me. Others…

    Structuring Your Nonprofit

Whether you already have a nonprofit or are about to start one, consider carefully the structure you set up. From your Board to your Staff to those you serve, the structure you create can have a lasting impact on your organization. Here are five questions to consider, particularly if you are looking to change your structure. 1) What is your current structure? 2) What other options are available to you? 3) How are other similar organizations structured? Are they thriving? 4) What should you do? 5) How do you get there? What is your Strategic Plan going to be? Structure is important. Do not let it keep you from getting…

    Dream

Being an Idea Addict, one of my favorite things to do is dream. “I have an idea” is a regular phrase my wife hears. For me, dreaming is my favorite pastime. It is a core part of my day, week, life, work and family life. Whether you love to dream or struggle with it, I think there are two key factors to stimulating the dreaming and ideation process. 1) Personal Development 2) Community Let’s begin with Personal Development. What are you reading? If you want to grow, you need to be intentional with what you put into your mind. What are you watching? What are you listening to? Jim Rohn…
