Over the past year, I have taken some significant strides forward in my desire to become a reader. Perhaps I’ll share the reasons for this change later. As I’ve made the switch, I have found there are three phrases that have been part of my vocabulary, even part of my identity, for too long. These phrases have held me back in my desire to be a reader and to be a better reader. They have inhibited my love of learning and ability to grow as a person. Well, it is time to let them go. Here they are, along with some alternatives. 1) “I’m not a reader.” Seems obvious, but…

    What Needs To Stop?

What are you doing that you do not really need to be doing? What are you telling yourself you need to do that you don’t need to do? What are other people (or culture) telling you to do (or be) that you do not need to do (or be)? Stop it. What is essential? Do THAT.

    Choose Your Backpack Wisely

I once heard someone say you should choose your backpack wisely. Whatever size backpack you choose, you will fill it. If you get a small one, you will fill it. Previously, you have decided THIS will be your priority. Then something urgent crashes in, reprioritizing your life without your permission. Sometimes this happens so much, eventually it becomes difficult to tell which is which. What is important? What is urgent? You do not know. Then urgent replaces itself as also…

    Leadership: Micromanagement vs. Multiplication

In leadership, there are two ends of a spectrum. On the one end is micromanagement. On the other is multiplication. Both have their place. Micromanagement receives a lot of negative press. However, it has its place. Particularly for short bursts it can be helpful. Rarely is it a good longterm strategy for leadership, though. It leaves the leader trapped doing someone else’s job and the led person without any ownership. Multiplication is ideal. When a leader can eventually give complete ownership of a task or job, everyone benefits. The organization grows. The leader is freed to do what only she can do. The employee is given a boost of purpose…
